Quality of
Carpets:
To understand the
quality of carpets is not as difficult as it is introduced. Anyone who is
armed with basic information could tell the difference between a poor quality
and good quality carpet.
Here are some of
the main information choose the good quality carpets from the quality
Quality is
determined by the aestetical and structural considerations. Aestetical
consideration basically is depend on personal taste. The structural valuation
could be done much more objectively. There are four main points to consider:
1. the quality of
the material used for the carpet
2. the fineness
and regularity of the knotting
3. the clarity and
permanence of dyes
4. how the rug
lies on the floor
How to assess the
quality of your rug quickly:
One of the bast
methods to understand the quality of hand knotted rug is look at the back of
the rug. This gives you not only an excellent idea about the fineness of the
knotting but also help you to discover whether there are any repairs or damage
on your carpet. On a good rug, the design should be clearly visible on the
back of the carpet.
Fineness of the
knotting
Knot count refers
to number of knots tied in 1 inch² or 1 cm². Any carpet reaching the number
of knots over 150 in 1 inch² is considered as medium grade or reasonable fine
knotted carpet. But anything over 250 or 300 knot per inch² is considered as
the top grade or very fine knotted carpets.
Quality of the
dyes
This can be only
understood in the laboratory.
Quality of The
Material
One of the most
simple methods to cheque the quality of the wool is to fold or crease the pile
and see how quickly and easily wool returns to its former shape. If it doesn't
return to its former shape, the wool is too soft or inelastic. Don't apply
this test for pure silk carpets, this might hurt the carpet.
To test whether a
rug lies flat
Always lay the
carpet on a flat surface and examine carefully whether there are any ringes,
bumbs or depressions. If you don't see anything, run your hand across the
surface of the carpet to detect these faults.
